
Capacity Building: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Training
Introduction:
At the Pakistan Institute of Living and Learning, Four Researchers attended a “Child and Adolescent Mental Health Course” organized by Aga Khan University as part of capacity building. In this four-months course, the PILL team members actively participated in this course, enhanced their knowledge and skills in addressing child and adolescent mental health challenges and explored key aspects of child and adolescent mental well-being.
The Goal of the Course:
The primary goal of the course was to provide the team of psychologists, parents, and educators with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of child and adolescent-related mental health disorders and other issues and to equip them with the necessary tools and resources to help them effectively deal with them.
Impact:
The course provides a profound understanding of each mental health disorder and issue experienced by children and adolescents; It covered essential topics, including the stages of child development, the impact of trauma on growth, and resilience-building strategies. It also provided insights into identifying and managing neurodevelopmental disorders, somatic symptom disorders, learning difficulties, anxiety, and impulse control disorders (ICD). The PILL team learned how they can assess and identify these issues in children and adolescents, the effective treatments available and how to effectively psycho-educate and engaged parents through the treatment process; furthermore, how they can proceed with the cases in different setting like schools, communities, clinics, and hospitals and what to do when the case required another specialists’ attention.
Conclusion
The event was a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding of child development and mental health. The PILL team greatly benefited from the course, gaining essential skills to enhance our capacity to support children and adolescents. Through interactive sessions, participants developed effective communication skills with children, adolescents, and parents, along with practical parenting approaches. This transformative learning experience equipped attendees with the knowledge and tools to better understand and promote child and adolescent mental well-being, enabling them to create meaningful change in their professional and community settings.
