The Visit to Peshawar Institute of Cardiology
The University of Glasgow and NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde were pleased to host Professor Dr. Syed Shahkar Ahmad Shah, Dean & Chief Executive Officer, Peshawar Institute of Cardiology, Pakistan, during his recent visit to Glasgow, United Kingdom.
The visit was undertaken to strengthen academic and research collaboration between the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology and the University of Glasgow, with a particular focus on clinical research, clinical trial capacity, and international partnership development. It also provided an important opportunity to advance discussions on the ACROSS programme and formalise collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
During the visit, Professor Shah engaged with senior academic and research leaders across the University of Glasgow and visited key facilities including the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics, the Glasgow UKCRC-Registered Clinical Trials Unit, and the Clinical Research Facility and Imaging Research Facility at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
A significant milestone of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, reflecting a mutual commitment to a bilateral institutional partnership and long-term collaboration. Discussions also highlighted the role of the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology in forthcoming ACROSS work packages, alongside opportunities for mentorship in the development of a Clinical Trial Unit and arrangements for PhD training at the University of Glasgow.
This highly productive visit has established a strong foundation for future collaboration in clinical research, education, and institutional development between the Peshawar Institute of Cardiology, the University of Glasgow, and the ACROSS programme.
ACROSS is funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) using UK international development funding from the UK Government to support global health research. The views expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the UK Government.
